Did you try manually flying it back to yourself in "Sports" mode?
What I would do in a situation like this is to put it in Sports mode, fly at a lower altitude and flying back manually.. Sports mode is more than capable of cutting through 30+ mph wind... RTH cannot cope with high winds...
This is how I attach the Loc8tor to my Mavic. The string attachment is a backup just in case of impact that tears the loc8tor loose from the Mavic.
No issues with compass or GPS interference in this location.

The latest version of the app doesn't allow you to turn off GEO anymore. DJI is forcing everyone to use GEO and discontinuing the old NFZ in the latest versions of the app and firmware.
DJI Go 4 v4.0.3 for Android came out about 9 days after .400 firmware was released, so that's the version that should be most compatible with .400..
