Life cycle could certainly longer than 2 to 3 years if you are not fly MP that frequently. But I guess that much less than 10% of MP would survived and still actively flied after 2 years owned by pilots.
Planning your flight route is very important . Try to avoid front sensors facing the sun, going out or coming back. As soon as you get the connection back, you could cancel RTH and fly MP backward manually.
To OP
META4 is right. Do not launch from concrete sidewalk. Why take risk? You won’t believe that on grass lawn with sprinkles system sometimes will cause calibration errors. Any DIY launch pad works good. I use a 3x4 plywood
I would suggest you to use the scheduled self-unlocking or the PC method as you mentioned. Keep in mind that PC method can unlock up to 30 locations at the same time.

It happened to me twice but both time my connector was still working.
As why we got “aircraft disconnected “, the followings are my thoughts:
1. I believe...
To OP,
1. You said that both DJI GO4 & controller disconnected from MP, then how you got a RTH request from GO4?
2. What’s message you got from GO4 when you believed GO4 disconnects from MP? Was it “aircraft disconnected “?
