There are several reasons for this, mainly more and more inexperienced folks are diving in to the UAV world with no clue about the rules or the pitfalls. Just watch the videos all over Youtube. I wouldn't let some of these folks borrow my hammer (for fear they wouldn't know how to operate it).
GPS reception is the only concern I might have, but that would depend on the metallic content of the sticker material.. I know aluminum foil will block GPS.

That said, this is the second thread in 2 days (that I know of) that involved this kind of behavior over water...
Mine was a brand new Samsung Galaxy note 4, from Amazon. I guess it sat on the shelf a while.
I have swapped batteries for friends (in iPhones), but it can be dicey, depending on the model.
