Best controller to phone connection

Sorry if this has been covered before.
Is there a preferred connection for phone to rc.?
Is there any advantage in using the middle USB over the micro USB or vice versa.?

The bottom USB port needs to be used when the included cable is too short to fit the mobile device. It's not really an advantage -- it's the only option at that point.
