Do I need a data package to fly my drone if I buy a tablet. AT&T says I can download the app on Wi-Fi. But when I'm away from Wi-Fi the drones should fly right

You do not need a data connection to fly.

The initial home point I believe is recorded from the Mavic's GPS. After you take off if you move around and want to set a new home point you would need GPS on your tablet to do so. Some tablets have GPS without cellular option, others (lime Apple) do not. You only need the data to live update the maps while you fly. Android had an option to download offline versions and Apple allows you to prefly the area and save them in cache.

So bottom line, you can fly without GPS and Data on a tablet, easier with it though.
