DJI Mavic pilots - Australia

Hi Guys,
I'm in Sydney Hills area, just got my Mavic a couple of weeks ago.
Does anyone know about decrease in the range and gps problem when using the mavic in isolated areas where there is no phone reception? I took mine to Fiji but was worried about losing it at sea due to no GPS signal on some remote islands.
Got the fly more package too by the way, it's pretty cool.

The phone reception is only needed for loading the map overlay. Shouldn't have anything to do with rc signal range or gps reception. Make sure you do have gps for the home point to be recorded before takeoff in case you do fly out of signal.

Thanks for the tips, I'll make sure I don't fly in risky island areas

GPS shouldn't be a problem on remote islands as the signals come from satellites. Perhaps you meant phone reception.

Hey Stratos,

I was going to fly in Sydney harbor soon too, have you heard of any restriction due to seaplane airspace at all?

I think there is a gray area on this matter. I got a couple of my videos flagged by some idiot scaring the **** out of me sa police start posting crap of them.

Based on CASA rules at least on their website the rules are simple and the same time quite confusing.

For a start the rules for flying drones in Australia reduce to simple rules:

  • In controlled air space the operating limit is 120 meters
  • you shouldn't fly within 5.5 KMs of an airport / manned control tower
  • not flying above crowds, people , stadiums
  • fly at least 30 meters away from basically everything.

Now, based on CASA facebook they posted a low res map stating that the whole bay and the northshore of city, starting from the Harbour all the way to Chatswood its a no fly zone, however there is nothing officially posted .

By the way there are so many drone haters in Facebook demanding CASA to ban all drones flying in the city. Its actually quite sad.
There was a lady saying. " I thought I saw a drone and I think it was spying me, I saw him 5 seconds but I felt spied" WTBF

Show me the link to CASA where this is clearly stated

Sydney Harbour is restricted airspace which means it's a NFZ

Exactly as a Hobby flier you CAN FLY IN A CONTROLLED AIRSPACE provided you stay below 400ft.
Now there is NO information at all from CASA stating the restriction or exclusion area around the Harbour.

I do agree that it would be stupid to fly close to the Bridge. But no one can point me exactly on the areas of exclusions from CASA that include the Harbour area.

And by the way this Screenshot if from 2015... quite outdated.
Sydney Harbour is still restricted airspace. You need to refer to the airspace maps.

You are totally incorrect there mate. Standby and I shall post it shortly.

The Sydney harbour no fly zones or restricted areas are promulgated in the AIP by Air Services Australia in the Designated Airspace Handbook, under CASA regulation.

AIP DAH Excerpt:

SECTION 13 – PRD AREAS

Conditional RA (Restricted Area) Status
In order to assist with shared use of airspace, all restricted areas have been allocated an “RA Status”. This status will give an indication as to the likelihood of obtaining a clearance to fly through restricted airspace. NOTAMs may be issued to indicate changes to the RA Status; which should be checked prior to flight planning.
RA STATUS LEGEND:
Conditional RA 1: Pilots may flight plan through the Restricted Area and under normal circumstances expect a clearance from ATC.
Conditional RA 2: Pilots must not flight plan through the Restricted Area unless on a route specified in ERSA GEN FPR or under agreement with the Department of Defence, however a clearance from ATC is not assured. Other tracking may be offered through the Restricted Area on
a tactical basis.
Conditional RA 3: Pilots must not flight plan through the Restricted Area and clearances will not be available.

If you want an actual link here you go https://www.airservicesaustralia.com/aip/current/dah/dah.pdf
It is on page 126.

BTW for context here is the airspace designation for pine gap showing how it is restricted in the same manner as RA3. Part of the Pine gap RA is not even in controlled airspace, however this has no bearing on the restriction in any case.

Mate this doesn't mean anything AT ALL to the normal hobbyist pilot.
And my point still valid, this is NOT clearly stated ANYWHERE in CASA website.

Sydney Harbour is still restricted airspace. You need to refer to the airspace maps.

Can you point me to any published map from CASA that shows this precisely?
