Does anyone know if you have to remove the gimbal guard when downloading your photos/videos directly from the Mavic? I think you have to turn the Mavic on, but does it do the gimbal reset even if it is not connected to a controller. If it did that it may burn out the gimbal motors if it is locked when trying to move.

You should always remove the gimbal lock before powering on the Mavic.

Anytime you power on the mavic it will do a gimbal check and will tell you the motor is overloaded if the guard is left in place.

Definitely remove the guard when powering on the drone. I always just find it easier to pop the MicroSD into my laptop so I don't have to fuss with cords, turn on the mavic, or let alone even have a battery in it.
