Few days ago I ordered a new mavic, just got it today. I've been seeing a lot of bricked Mavics that fall out of the sky due to motors cutting off midflight and/or losing signal. Is this a common issue that DJI is or isn't aware of? Or is this a 1 in a 100 kinda case where bad luck is playing a big role?

I really don't have an answer for you but I really don't think it's a 1 in a 100 thing . More like a 1 in thousands.
I haven't had any issues with mine and though I don't have
but around 260 miles on it I don't baby it. I fly 4 battery's every
time I go out and do fly it like I stole it.
Here your going to read about the issues some have but that's
why many join. How many havn't joined and flying.
Just my thoughts .

I haven't seen any of these issues being caused by them becoming bricked. I have read of a few where the battery was not correctly installed, or where the batteries clips were damaged and this caused it to wiggle loose. Of all the things to worry about, this is very low on my list. like @dirkclod above, I have over 100 flights and 150km distance flown and have never encountered this myself.

If you're thorough with your preflight checklist this should never be an issue.
