GPS Question

Waiting for my Mavic but I have a question about GPS. I will be using an ipad mini, 4 wifi only, with the controller. If I use my iPhone 6 plus as a hot spot and connect the mini to it, will I have gps so the map shows up on the mini? Sorry I'm not very tech savy.

You cannot share GPS data over a hot spot. You can share your cellular connection though. That will allow you to download the maps in DJI GO. GPS is not needed for that feature.

ipad has GPS regardless, totally separate from internet connection

WiFi only iPads do NOT have a GPS. Only the cellular model does (no need for a SIM card for it to work though, it's just that the GPS receiver is built into the same chip that handles mobile communications).

Well I'll be damned.. you're right. I was sure they had GPS because I have a wifi iPad and it always seemed to show my location accurately on maps. I guess it's getting the location info some other way.

That's using a database of Wi-Fi access point locations to get an approximate position. Works best... where there are many APs around like in cities.
