So I start the latest firmware update.

Battery is low on the controller. So plug it in to charge. Also plug in the iPhone via the center USB connector.

So, it's under power (being charged) and I start the update. It downloads the update (very slow - about 10 minutes).

Of course the MP is burning battery for nothing during this period. Did I even need to have it on?

Starts the update: "Battery too low on controller". But it's plugged in... should not be an issue. (Even plugged into a UPS at that point...).

That's the way it works. I guess they don't want you unplugging to soon. DJI sometimes works in strange and mysterious ways.

If I remember correctly, it stated the Mavic battery and the controller needed to be at least 50 percent before starting the update.

If either the controller or aircraft is below 50% it won't update, period. Plugged in or not doesn't matter.
Turn everything off, charge and start again when ready.

One thing I've learned about electronics. If you're doing anything that has the word firmware involved, carefully follow the directions and be patient.
