No holes, no fuss, no mess. I used the string from a propeller bag, tied it on, gently melted the two ends of the string, (I used a soldering iron) which reduced the ends down close to the knots and will prevent the string from fraying. The string tied to the dome clamp, allows it to snap on and off normally. I ordered a red gimbal lock/lens cover from Aero3D (viewed it on utube). After viewing and reading installation procedures for the stock G. lock, the 3D printed lock from Aero3D seems like the solution to the unreliable, fiddly, etc., stock gimbal lock.
