With a spotter using binoculars I can get about 3400-4000' before you can no longer see the drone. Obviously 7800' was outside line of sight which is a requirement to fly.
I stopped at scenic view of the Grand Canyon on the Navajo reservation and asked if I could fly my drone. I was told it was against the rules but said he didn't care. It was mid day light and I didn't center the gimbal so the horizon is off.
