Good day/evening to everyone, I just purchased my 1st drone! I ordered the Mavic Air 2 which should be here sometime this week. I'm ready to dive into the world of drones and thought I would pop in and say hello. All tips and what not is welcome. Looking forward to chatting with everyone.

Welcome to Mavic Pilots .
I hope you will find our site helpful and look forward to any input , photo's/video's you might post .
Don't be shy and ask anything if you can't find it by searching . Thumbswayup

Welcome aboard and hopefully you have user manuals from DJI's product page downloading now.

As first rule it's far better to have intact drone sitting on ground while still studying things, than damaged from mishap drone/in tree/fly away.
Your drone simply won't live long enough to do all the possible mistakes.

So don't rush forward to do complex flying and especially combined to recording video.
Actually before taking off might be good to few times practise getting drone ready for flying just to learn that routine faster.
Waiting for recording of home point and checking from map that location and direction are correct are big part of making sure flight goes well/you have backup in case of remote problem/interference etc.

And when getting to flying, take your time to learn behaviour/performance of drone and controlling it, before flying near obstacles, or at bigger distance/altitude.
Also always plan ahead/have backup plan, like alternative landing spots in case of something forcing you to bring drone down fast. (or just stronger wind pushing drone away)
That's really part of pre-flight procedures.

Welcome from the Hampton Roads area of Virginia, USA. I am a Mini 2 Flyer and I know the excitement of flight. So, if I may offer some advice.

Do not let the excitement of the moment get the best of you. When you are going out to fly, do it slowly and deliberately. Get used to a set procedure and even practice it.

There are so many things I could write but these are the highlights that I feel need mentioning.

Plug in your phone/tablet into your controller; turn on the Controller and DJI Fly App (if it does not start on its own…). On the Drone, open the front legs, then open the back legs, then remove the Gimbal Cover.

The Gimbal is the most delicate item on the Drone and banging or bumping can damage it. I also fastened a short "Remove Before Flight" ribbon to the cover so it's more noticeable and I do not forget to remove it…

Turn on the drone and watch it come to "life." Watching the Gimbal go through its self-check is almost like watching a kitten or puppy opening its eyes for the first time…

Place the drone down (preferably on a Landing Pad) while it finishes its self-test (collecting satellites, etc…).

Check your battery status (Phone, Drone, and Controller), check the Signal Strength, by now the Controller should have reported it updated the Home Point.

Lift off, 4-5 feet (1-1/2 meters) or so, hover a bit, check the controls (move the drone a bit forward, back, left, right, yaw left and right). By now, your Controller will probably report again, Home point Updated.

If you go out in a rush and race thru your start up and take off before the drone has finished it prep, it may update its Home Point over that pond or that old tree you are flying over and in your excitement, you'll fly the drone long past it Low Battery point and when it engages Return to Home and lands in the pond or in a tree; it will be all on you…

Now go have fun, learn to fly the drone by sight before you try to fly it out a distance depending on the video feed, FPV.

I would also advise you to use YouTube and watch a lot of the Videos on flying and setting up the Drone. When it is too dark, too cold, or too wet, you can "fly it vicariously" through YouTube. Also watch some of the Blooper Drone Videos and learn how not to fly your "New Baby."

Below is the link to all of the downloads offered by DJI for the Mavic Air. You will also find the 57-page User Manual, in case your Drone did not come with one. The User Manuals are published in different languages.

Welcome to the forum. I would recommend checking out Youtube, there is a lot of great content and info on drones especially for first time pilots.

Welcome to Mavic Pilots! :) Enjoy the forum!Thumbswayup

Thank you all for the warm welcome! One question I do have is about the controller. The stick placement doesnt look very comfortable, so was curious are there reliable aftermarket controllers or is that what we are stuck with? Wonder why they didnt go with a more ergonomic handheld design?

Welcome. We have all been new and many of us not so long ago.

My advice? Take it slow. Stay clear of objects until you develop a bit of skill. Commit to some practice time flying and you'll be surprised at how quickly your skill will develop. Take time to understand all the features of your drone because there are many and a lot are buried in on-screen menus. I'm sure you're going to love it!

Congratulations and good luck!

Ah ok. I saw that it was discontinued. Wonder if it was because of the chip shortages?
