I took off from the top of a cliff and descended over 600 feet to get some shots of the river below. When I tried to climb out of the canyon to bring my Mavic home I could not get it to climb above 400 feet (200 feet from the top of the cliff). Since my battery was running low at that point I chose to find a place to land while I still had some control. Several hours later and with a new case of Poison Oak, I was able to locate it and retrieve it. I was too panicked by my low battery to try much of anything at the time but I'm wondering if there Is some way to override the 400 foot limitation in this situation?

Let me see if I get it right your altitude was showing -600 at the lowest point an then it stopped climbing at -200?

Altitude is based on the take off point. So any limitation would be based on that take off point. If you went 600' down and then rose up to 400', your altitude according to the software would be -200'.

Feel free to post your logs for more info.
