Acting weird or am I overreacting?

I flew the drone at lease 9 times today. 5 during the day in New Jersey. 4 flights at night in NYC. During the day, the Mavic hovered in place at 4 feet every time it was activated. When I activated the Mavic in NYC, the Mavic drifted in every direction & hovered anywhere from 2 feet to 8". I calibrated the compass before every flight. I did get a compass interference once but moved the drone & fine.

My question: why such a difference in behavior?

Could have it been interference from the metal in the buildings or the radio waves?

Why calibrate compass ? If it doesn't ask then don't ! That may be your problem. Calibration in a congested city is very hard to do and get a good one.

It was recommended when changing location, you calibrate but tonight it asked for the calibration.

Similar thing happened to me in the convention center area of Orlando. Tons of big hotels and the giant metal convention center itself and the metal skywalks. First flight was squirrelly as all get out. Landed and moved it as far away from everything and rebooted everything. Was fine after that.
