Hello all,

Well I know it happens to everyone but I never suspected it would occur so unexpectedly. I was flying my mP in a large park in KC near a major museum. The park is about 150 yards wide and 500 yards long. It's bordered by 20ft. trees and neighborhoods and provides a large open space perfect for flying.

It was late evening and only a couple of people were in the park, Class D space with minor activity mainly sightseeing and police helicopters. I was flying in altitude mode and kept my max altitude under 300ft. The weather was perfect clear and late afternoon.

I was practicing long low altitude flying followed by a max speed climb to reveal the beauty of the local nearby Museum, the Nelson/Atkins to the north. I was also flying the same maneuver flying south toward a small waterway called Brush Creek. I was on my third battery and feeling like I had a decent feel for the aircraft and decided to finish for the day. The mP was southwest of my location and I decided to do a sideways dolly along the west border of trees to fly it back to my home location. As I was doing that a sightseeing helicopter flew directly overhead and I looked up briefly to check it's location, (I was flying under 50ft.), and then it happened. I lost the connection with the mP and when I looked back to where I expected the aircraft to be it was lost in the texture of the background trees. I knew it was nearby and had probably crashed into the border of trees somewhere to my west. I searched and searched panicking of course but grateful I was in an enclosed space so to speak.

I've only flown five times and was not prepared to deal with a lost connection and crash. Logic seemed to dictate that I continue searching on the west side of the park along the tree line, but zilch. It was starting to get dark and my worries were that it somehow escaped the park and was on someone's roof, car or worse...
I finally calmed down enough to get my wits about me and search for remedies on the web and I learned about viewing my flights on the flight log on the dji flying app. To my astonishment I was able to retrieve the last flight and play it in real time. I discovered after I lost connection and visual contact that the mP had flown in a completely different direction and ended up in a grove of trees to my east, 180 degrees from where I expected it to be. I finally found it at the base of a tree... the impact was hard enough to dislodge two of the props, knock the battery out and snap the gimbal so it's repairsvillke for me today, (why didn't I buy dji refresh???!?).

My question after all this wordy stuff is why did I lose connection??? There were no obstacles, I wasn't flying beyond the range of the controller and in a low altitude visual mode. I had return to home enabled but realized all grass looks the same and that it probably got lost, but I had a good gps signal. Is it possible the heli flying overhead interfered with my connection?

I'm enclosing a screen grab from my last flight and would welcome your comments so I can understand what happened. I'm perplexed but feeling I was lucky.

best,
Steve W.

that sucks, sorry to hear. I am worried about this myself. when will it happen i always ask myself? do you think it went into return to home mode when you lost connection,,, or just pulled a HAL. but I know what the responses will be. download flight data and post so someone can analyze it

I am sorry to hear of your crash Ambro77, I have had a few small ones but nothing needing a repair job. If you post your .DAT file (from the mavic itself) someone here will be able to give you a good idea of what happened.

I don't see anything in that area that should cause a disconnect. Maybe the helicopter was broadcasting? I still don't think it'd overwhelm the controller as they'd be on a different frequency.

For what it's worth, you were flying in Class G airspace with class E starting at 700AGL and above that Class B from 4000-8000. Maybe I'm reading the chart wrong, but you're good. When I read class D I had to check. Class D is to the surface any time the tower is operating and is a NFZ.

I circled where you were flying on the attached VFR sectional.

As far as those trackimo devices go. I believe they only work as long as there is cell service, correct,? If you are in an area without that they don't actually use satellites for true gps although it prob would have worked in this case.

Why didn't it rth?

I have a Trackimo and there is spotty cell service where I fly. It seems to track the bird just fine. I have not flown into a known dead zone though, just areas where there is only Verizon coverage and other carriers get no signal.

I'm sorry for your loss, be careful doing dollying and trucking left / right as those collision avoidance sensors don't pick up anything to the left or right (or behind for that matter).

Trying to but I can't access the flight data I assume because the drone is in a broken state. I connected everything, powered up and opened the app but still couldn't access via advanced controls under settings. I'll post when I get the info. Thanks!

Thanks B2, I'm trying to get the file but having trouble accessing. Hopefully I can post soon.

I know this sounds like closing the door after the horse got away and with all the hurt and expense for a repair it might be prudent to consider a GPS?

Agreed jimapp, but I thought I was enabled via gps. I was able to find the craft at it's last signal and at the exact spot once I figured out what I was looking at on the app.

i know this doesn't help the OP but isnt the mavic supposed to RTH in the event of a signal loss ?
im personally less worried abotu a signal loss and more worried that the mp doesnt do what its supposed to do in the event of a signal loss.

It just may be possible that when you looked up, you inadvertently moved the controls in such a manner that the Mavic went in a different direction. You should be able to tell if that is what happened by looking at your flight log and how the controls were being moved prior to the accident. It is possible that you lost the connection when the Mavic crashed. If ever I need to look away from my Mavic when I am flying it for a similar reason to what you said, I hit the pause button so it holds it in place.

I'm guessing your phone lost connection, but the RC controller did not. If the app shows your last known position at the point of impact, then the RC was fine. You should keep that in mind- ALWAYS check the RC Controller- you may still have control!

We all dislike to read about disconnects. Its always a puzzle. Im looking at the aviation map and it looks like the area is saturated with really big antennas . Do you feel they may have had an effect on your flight?

This is what I believe happened as well. Like you said, if its location was recorded to where it crashed, the controller was still connected.

It seems many confuse a phone disconnect with a full controller disconnect. The earlier is more dangerous in my opinion, since it may lead you to believe the controller is disconnected when you are still in control. (Which may lead to a crash if you do not have visual contact.)

I haven't had a phone disconnect before, but what I would do if I did experience one, and was not LOS, is turn off the controller to ensure the activation of RTH.

That sounds like good advice to me! I may be one of those....

Interesting point... I'm still definitely climbing the learning curve. I remember being at about 15 ft. and starting the trucking maneuver, hearing the helicopter nearby and looking up to assess the location. Then I received the disconnect warning and looked back to spot the Mavic and had lost it against the background view. I'm fairly certain I did not move the controls as I'm careful not to make sudden adjustments. I'll definitely remember the pause function!

Here's an update:

I received the repair billing from dji and it's 191.00. I'll post the flight log as soon as I get it back and can hopefully decode the event.
