Beginner Mavic Air - San Diego

Hi all, just signed up. Got a Mavic Air for xmas but just this week put it in the air. Switched off beginner mode and cautiously getting used to the controls. Pretty cool! I live at the beach and want to get good enough to launch from a boat while on the water (and avoid the seagulls and pelicans). And hope to confidently take it on our Viking cruise next year and be able to bring some the attractions and history closer to us. I look forward to the support of the MP site. Over and out for now.

Welcome to the forum from the mountains of Colorado! I love San Diego and SoCal, except for the traffic of course. Been there many times. Some great scenery around there. Looking forward to seeing some of your pics/videos. Happy and safe flying!

You'll find that flying your Mavic Air or any DJI quad is so easy. They practically fly themselves. This can lead to overconfidence.

Read the manual, and be conservative at first. Practice using “Find My Drone”. Chances are you will crash and perhaps lose your bird. Don't wait until that happens to learn how to recover a lost drone.

Lots of good stuff to shoot throughout San Diego County. Lived there for 25 years (Rancho Bernardo). Whenever you need assistance, there are over 100,000 of us from around the world to help you grow as a pilot and photographer.

Check with Viking before your trip. Many cruise companies don't allow drones on board. Not sure why.

SET RTH TO HOVER.

...other than that...

Pretend Sport mode doesn't exist.

Check your compass before flight.

Get a strong GPS lock before flight.

Set your RTH before flight.
