New to the drone world.

I noticed I need approval to fly on my screen. I see I live in class D (all blue) air space. Am I correct I can call the tower to get approval ~ but then how to I over ride the DJI software to allow the Mavic Mini to fly ?

You haven't been able to call towers for almost two years now. You either need to use one of the LAANC apps (like Airmap or Kittyhawk) to get instant authorization, or file an application for an airspace authorization via the FAA's dronezone website.

After you get the authorization, you next should complete the unlock process upon trying to take off in DJI Fly.

the unlock process how is it completed with the Mavic Mini

Two options. Either a box will pop up in DJI Fly when you try to take off and you'll answer a couple of questions on your device screen before DJI will unlock. (your mobile device will need cellular data at the time to do that), or you can get the unlock in advance by visiting DJI - Self Unlock from your computer.
