I'm reading through the manual on my recently purchased Mavic. I notice that it lists a maximum altitude of 1640'. Anyone know if that is AGL or MSL?

Leaves me wondering if the Mavic would be a poor choice for inspecting tall towers.

The Mavic manual lists that spec as the "Max Service Ceiling Above Sea Level". And, it's 16,404 feet.

At the place I am reading it, it does not say. It says:

As I think about it, MSL doesn't make sense as there is lots of area that is more than 1640 MSL that surely the Mavic could fly.

Am I missing something?

Ah. I thought you were referring to the max (suggested) operating ceiling.

The 500 meters max altitude is the altitude above the takeoff point.

If you're talking about those 2000ft ones that are common in Florida and other flat states, then yes, you won't be able to inspect above 1640ft ATOP. With unmodded FW, that is. With modded, the sky is not the limit, the battery is. :D
