Define "record".

It has limited internal storage capacity that you can cache flight images and video to, but I recommend using an SD card as default for all flight imagery because of firmware upgrades needing that precious storage space.

Flight logs are always stored on the internal storage.

What does updates have to do with external memory?

It will log them without the SD card but as pointed out, screen recordings will go there. I don't have an SD card installed in my SC since I don't screen record and I turn of caching.
