It starts to descend almost immediately. I'm usually at about 300 feet when I engage and I try to tap as high on the screen as possible but it always starts a slow descent. I can manually regain the altitude but when I release the stick, it begins its slow descent again. I don't know if it will level off at a certain altitude, I'm afraid to find out. Am I missing something or do I have a defective bird?

Is you camera pointing down? Then you can tap as high as possible - it will descend.
Bring you camera up horizontal and try again.

There should be a mode where selecting where to go only sets the horizontal coordinates and maintains altitude. That way you can select a POI on the ground to get over to it and not dive into it!

Not sure about the MP but the MA has exactly that option, it’s in the Tapfly menu called Co-ord.
