Hi guys,

I'm planning to start making some selfie videos so later on I can put them together. Something like this:

For sure you all have already seen them....

So since yesterday I'm planning my first shot. It's from a hotel balcony. Regarding movements I'm comfortable to take of but would prefer to land in a different location as there is the pool zone not far from the balcony and we all know that our birds do catch some attention.

So my question is:

Would be possible to take of, have it high enough, away from any obstacles and from my hotel room walk own to the road and land it in a open area near by? My concern is losing connection between the room and the street... What could happen? Any advice on this?

Cheers!

I am no expert, but if you lose connection, the drone will trigger RTH and probably crash to the roof of the hotel (suppose the home point was automatically recorded). Maybe you can try to find a safe place to set the home point manually, just in case of bad connection?

Understand... sounds a good idea/advice. Thanks!

More inputs are always welcome...

Possible? Yes, you could set the aircraft to hover in place when the remote controller signal is lost. Legal and/or safe to do? Probably not.

Thanks msinger.
Didn't know about this option.
So let's imagine signal is lost during those 5/8min. Would the aircraft when outside again, good satellite coverage quickly and automatically connect to the aircraft?? Or do I need to do something else to reconnect both RC and aircraft?

I'm assuming you mean would the remote controller reconnect to the aircraft.

Good satellite coverage is not required to connect the remote controller to the aircraft. It just needs to be within range and unaffected by interference.

Yes, I meant RC to aircraft. Thanks.
Ok, understand. Do you know where/menu to have a look at this setting?

Is it possible to set up a home point different from the one where I'm taking off? Not using the RC option, to make the home point same as the remote point...

After the home point is set when the motors are started, you could fly to the desired home point location and set that location to the home point. There is no way to set the home point to a location where you or the aircraft is not currently located in DJI GO.

If flying with Litchi, you can tap and drag the home point to a new location on the map.

check the above answer, you can fly to a new location, set that as a new home point - if you really think the new location is safer than where it took off.

That's exactly what I had in mind... will have a look at it.

Regarding the other option of setting it to hover instead of landing. Would it hover in same altitude when connection was lost (high) or would it drop so tees and obstacles potentially becoming issues... ??

Thanks a lot for you help!

Thanks. Just need to decide between the two option I guess. Will keep planning now having this in mind.

The aircraft will hover in place (wherever it's currently located) when the remote controller signal is lost. It'll continue to hover until either the remote controller reconnects or the battery reaches the critically low level (which causes it to land).

It might not be a bad idea to test the loss of signal before trying this, so you know what to expect. Change the setting to hover, as mentioned above, then take off from an open field somewhere. Fly up to some desired altitude and shut off the RC. If you got the setting correct, the aircraft should sit there waiting until you turn the RC back on, or until the battery drops too low (again, as mentioned above).

However, you may not want to launch from the balcony of a hotel, as there could be way too much steel around you. Launching when the compass is confused about which way is north has been proven to be the cause of many crashes. I know there have been people that have said that they have successfully launched from a hotel balcony, but I personally wouldn't risk it.

... and people... and hotel rules that prohibit such potentially dangerous activity.

Flying out of the balcony of a multi-story building sounds like a really bad idea on many levels. I am reminded of a series of commercials that ran during the height of the Internet boom which showed a team of writers brainstorming an idea for a way to promote a new product. Each idea involved an activity which had all sorts of potential hazards. The commercial then showed all the horrible outcomes from their idea, with the final scene showing the team throwing the idea into the wastebasket.
