My Mavic pro clue away last night. It was signal after about 500 feet. Obstacle avoidance was turned off. It never came back. Does it returned by default, or did turning off obstacle avoidance disable the smart return the homes? This blows! Guess it’s time for a Mavic 2 pro gerrr

Disabling obstacle avoidance will not affect RTH.
The recorded flight data often solves the mystery of lost drones but if you lost signal, there won't be any data after that.

To see what the data shows ....
Go to DJI Flight Log Viewer | Phantom Help
Follow the instructions there to upload your flight record from your phone or tablet.
That will give you a detailed report on the flight data.
Come back and post a link to the report it gives you.

ps .. until you know what actually happened to your drone it's more accurate to simply say that it's lost.

Does it returned by default
It does with the default settings, but you could have changed the settings or a slew of other things could have happened.

As @Meta4 noted above, the flight log is your best bet for tracking it down. Post it here and we can help you.
