Anybody out there who done any drone flying in the Provence area of France, or in France in general? Any hassles or things (other than the usual) that I should be aware of? Thanks!

I was there in Vaucluse near Mt Ventoux for 3 weeks in June July, heaps of no-fly zones you need to be aware of, and also any urban area (like a tiny village with 20 houses) is forbidden (that includes public spaces such parks etc..).

In terms of colors on the map, as per attached screenshot, Red = forbidden, then where it says "Hauteur Maximale" that's the max height allowed.

No need of any special authorisation as the Mavic falls in the Categrie A:
Drones - Loisir et compétition
"Les aéromodèles de catégorie A peuvent être utilisés sans autorisation préalable" --> "Categorie A can be used without any authorisation"

It can be quite a challenge to find a place to fly, I would recommend going on a hike in the Alps. The scenery is not only beautiful, but you also have the least no-fly zones. As explained above, basically all populated areas are off-limits or severely height restricted.

Here is my first attempt:
