Gimbal overloaded: friction + heating

My gimbal has been acting real funny the last few days. Sometimes I got a warning when I switched it on to check the clamp cover that the gimbal was overloaded. Sometimes it wouldn't position itself properly on switching on, sometimes it would have really shaky video in flight and sometimes I could fly it for an hour (3 batteries) with zero issues.
Sat down with it and switched it on and off numerous times to see what was going on. Seems to be a little bit of friction when the motors heat up causing it to get stuck. Presumably this in turn causes the motors to work harder heating up more causing more friction.
Any experienced DJI owners out there that have come across this before, I'm guessing there's no bearings in the gimbal so I'm not sure what's causing the friction, some dirt has gotten in maybe? Something misaligned? Anyone done a gimbal disassembly before? It's only the lens axis that is having trouble..
