Greetings from Birmingham Alabama, welcome to the forum!

Brand new drone owner/flyer, looking to soak up advice from you "old guys/gals"

Welcome from the Hampton Roads area of Virginia, USA.

Living in the UK means there are lots of rules and regulations, be sure you are following all of the laws and rules applicable to you. Here is a DJI Link to Many Sites of interest to all, even those in the U.S.A.

Drone Flight Application Strategy Digest, continually updated!

You did not say what you are flying, if it's DJI, let us know the model and I'll send you the link to the User manual. In the mean time…

Do not let the excitement of the moment get the best of you. When you are going out to fly, do it slowly and deliberately. Get used to a set procedure and even practice it.

Plug in your phone/tablet into your controller; turn on the Controller and DJI Fly App (if it does not start on its own…). On the Drone, open the front legs, then open the back legs, then remove the Gimbal Cover.

The Gimbal is the most delicate item on the Drone and banging or bumping can damage it. I also fastened a short "Remove Before Flight" ribbon to the cover so it's more noticeable and I do not forget to remove it…

Turn on the drone and watch it come to "life." Watching the Gimbal go through its self-check is almost like watching a kitten or puppy opening its eyes for the first time…

Place the drone down (preferably on a Landing Pad) while it finishes its self-test (collecting satellites, etc…).

Check your battery status (Phone, Drone, and Controller), check the Signal Strength, by now the Controller should have reported it updated the Home Point.

Lift off, 4-5 feet (1-1/2 meters) or so, hover a bit, check the controls (move the drone a bit forward, back, left, right, yaw left and right). By now, your Controller will probably report again, Home point Updated.

If you go out in a rush and race thru your start up and take off before the drone has finished it prep, it may update its Home Point over that pond or that old tree you are flying over and in your excitement, you'll fly the drone long past it Low Battery point and when it engages Return to Home and lands in the pond or in a tree; it will be all on you…

Now go have fun, learn to fly the drone by sight before you try to fly it out a distance depending on the video feed, FPV.

I would also advise you to use YouTube and watch a lot of the Videos on flying and setting up the Drone. When it is too dark, too cold, or too wet, you can "fly it vicariously" through YouTube. Also watch some of the Blooper Drone Videos and learn how not to fly your "New Baby."

Once again, what are you flying?

Happy and Safe Droning…

Hey Chief,

Thanks for the wise words. I find a process super helpful, and will for sure follow yours.
I picked up a DJI Mavic Mini "mach I" from a far more experienced pilot than I am, and am looking forward to aiming high.

DJI Mavic Mini "mach I"

I did a Google search and I could not find a reference to a DJI Mavic Mini "mach I". So I do not know it that just means your little baby has "Racing Stripes" on it or something more…

Any case, below is the link to all of the downloads offered by DJI for the Mavic Mini. You will also find the 49-page Mavic Mini's User Manual, in case your Drone did not come with one.

After you read the Manual, read it again, you will be surprised what you missed the first time and you will be better prepared for that first "scary moment…"

LOL,

I may (or may not?) have coined the "mach 1" portion. :) Just to differentiate form the 2, 3, SE etc.
Maybe I should have said Mini Originale

Thanks again.

Coin any name you want, Your Drone is simply a "DJI Mini," anything else you add is all on you and there's nothing wrong with that. My first Mini 2 was "Mini Pearl" but that was my private name for her…

My second Mini 2 was a "boy," my wife said so, and she named him "Eugene".

I wanted to ensure you, as a newbie, got the User Manual, because it will answer so many questions that you have not yet even thought to ask…

I was curious about your "Mach 1" because DJI does put out different versions of the same Drone. For Example, there is the Mavic Air, the Mavic Air 2, and the Mavic Air 2S, and all three have different user manuals.

Any case, enjoy your new baby, take care of him/her/it, like a new born and remember that the Gimbal is very delicate, so do not play with it (as in tweaking or plucking). Hope you bought the Care Refresh, it's worth it, if not for that actual benefit, but also for the "peace of mind."
