Don't know which thread to put this question under.
Do the motors need to be running to set the homepoint?
As I also intend using the Mavic from a boat, do the motors need to be running to set to return to remote?

No. You only need sufficient GPS reception.

Return to remote is NOT strictly true...

What it does is set the home point to the location of the remote at that PRECISE moment.
So on a boat you will immediately move away from this point.
It doesn't actively track the remote.
