How much battery swelling is too much?

I have 7 batteries.4 are totally flat and do not wobble when placed on a flat smooth surface. One wobbles easily and I won't use it.2 wobble very slightly and I'm wondering if I should not use them. Those 2 charge and function ok and I just noticed the wobble.Best to dispose or am I being over careful?

I wouldn't use a batterie that is swollen - no matter how much.
That resulted in disposing 5 of 6 batteries I had.

I asked myself the same question as you did: Where is the limit? Two of these five batteries were only slightly swollen. So I called my nephew who works on research + development of batteries for the auto industry/electric cars.

He suggested strongly not to use them anymore and to get them out of the house, dispose them properly.

Thanks MaxHam.Be nice in a few years to have safe high efficiency batteries.

I only have one that is slightly swollen and really when cold is flat but swells as it warms up.
I have it marked and don't fly with it cause of the chances of it popping out but do use it here
at my desk doing updates or just powering up tho check stuff in the Go app to answer questions
I don't already have screenshots of. Now when it gets bad enough I will dispose of it .

YIKES!!! Does that rule apply to old AA type battery’s as well. I collect all my old battery’s in a plastic bucket in my office until it’s getting full enough to make a trip.

Any swelling of any of my Batteries and I dispose of them. Dont need a Battery failing at the 10 minute mark some distance away from my launch point.
I look at it as self administered insurance.

CR2032.JPG

I received a parcel from Amazon UK yesterday containing a Anemometer which requires a CR2032 coin sized battery as found in desktop computer motherboards etc.. Didn't realise they were so potentially lethal that they required a specialist phone number and Global Response access code!

UK/EU Health & Safety overkill.

I don't think so.
To my understanding rechargeable Li-ion batteries are more prone to become unstable/a risk under certain conditions. Not sure though, will ask my nephew again :)

An extract taken from here:
Safety Concerns with Li-ion Batteries – Battery University

Simple Guidelines for Using Lithium-ion Batteries

A failing Li-ion begins to hiss, bulge and leak electrolyte.
  • Dowse Li-ion fire with water or use a regular fire extinguisher. Only use a Class D fire extinguisher for lithium-metal fires because of the reaction of water with lithium. (Li-ion contains little lithium metal reacting with water.)
  • If a Class D extinguisher is not available, douse a lithium-metal fire with water to prevent the fire from spreading.
  • For best results dowsing a Li-ion fire, use a foam extinguisher, CO2, ABC dry chemical, powdered graphite, copper powder or soda (sodium carbonate) as you would extinguish other combustible fires. Reserve the Class D extinguishers for lithium-metal fires only.
  • If the fire of a burning lithium-ion battery cannot be extinguished, allow the pack to burn in a controlled and safe way.
  • Be aware of cell propagation as each cell might be consumed on its own time table when hot. Place a seemingly burned-out pack outside for a time.

I was in Maui 2.5 years ago and the local Target store was out of drones.
I really wanted a Phantom 3S so I tried to order through Amazon. No way! They don't ship these drones with lithium batteries to Hawaii. I'm wondering if you can order a notebook or similar.

I made a friend in L.A. go to Best Buy, get the drone and Fedex it to me. That worked!
Kind of illogical though :)

Good chance they are simply complying with UN3480 affixing the label. CR2032 is a lithium cell so it is covered.

It is not worth the risk of losing your drone by a "swollen" battery or with fully decompensated cells.
Better replace it with a new one or use it only for updates.
Remember that lithium batteries (not a place for a chemistry class) can burn or explode, if they are damaged or have a crack ... as they go into combustion if the internal material of the battery comes into contact with the air.

the danger is - as soon as lipo started to gas and it expands - this process will not stop, and the more cycles you put on it - more gas it will produce. so, the danger here is that due to design of the lock, at some point this battery will dislodge itself while drone is in the air.
the solution - partial - is to use a velcro lipo belt around the drone to make sure lipo does not jump out, but somebody stated here on forum that the puffed lipos actually still push out of the connector, even if secured by the belt.

as of fire hazard - it will not ignite if it is slightly puffed. the problem is - you do not really know to what extent it is puffed as it sits inside of the plastic shell.

any hard driven lipo will puff a bit. some more, some less, but if you drain it to the 0 and pump 100A out of it - it will eventually gas. some last longer than others, like tattu 95C 850mah ones i have are really good - no gas at all on all of them... others are not so great, so, it always is a compromise of when to dispose of them. safest way is to dispose - but, you need to count your $ as well.

I have been using my Mavic Pro Platinum and batteries frequently since I purchased the unit in May of 18'. Yesterday, after not having used it for several months, I noticed that 2 of 3 batteries were significantly swollen. Hence, the two swollen batteries are now retired. I am totally discharging the 3rd battery as DJI recommends to do every few months as part of the battery maintenance. This is actually the first time I have done so. So, while I think that a 2 1/2 year life span is decent, I am faced with buying a new battery or two to replace the old. Didn't realize how difficult it is to find a new, in the box, battery at a reasonable price. Long story short, I will not continue to use the swollen batteries. I do not think you are being over cautious.

Any swelling is too much. Don’t fly with them. End result will be a sudden unpredictable battery failure or a battery disconnect.
