Ipad mini 4 with Mavic 2 Pro

Hi all
I know that part of my question has been answered before but here it goes in full.
I understand that an iPad (non cellular) doesn't have GPS to generate live sat map in case we need to change the Return home feature while in flight.
My real question is: If I get a cellular iPad which has GPS chip on it, do I need to get a sim card too in order to have full functionality?

No. The GPS is usable even if the SIM card is removed or the cellular service has not been activated.
