You just need a WiFi connection to load maps.

does it work in the wind ,or if you have a sore throat or cold i gave up on siri,it could never understand what i was saying

How do you load the map?

You open the map and scroll around the area you will be flying.
As you do, the squares of the map will "load into the cache".
That way when you are out there on scene, the maps will already be in the phone.
