Firstly with the M2 having waypoints 2.0, is it really necessary to have the 3rd party apps? Yes I know the benefit of offline setup.

Also for the smart controller is it even advisable?
If so which app handles the app controller resources better ?

For the SC, you'll need to see what features are important to you when selecting which app to use.

On the SC both app's install the same way and Dronelink needs google play store and google play services to be side-loaded, Litchi only needs to have these installed if you want to use google maps.
Litchi is loaded onto the SC via the amazon app store which I think is a cleaner install.

You should download the smart controller version from here:
If you want to fuss with getting play to work you can, but I did not and it ran fine.
It wont run but you do need to install play service and play - dronelink uses some sort of authentication from it.
