I acquired a Mavic that had landed in the ocean and was ruined. Since I knew it wasn't any good and have been curious about what makes the gimbal tick, I decided to take it apart. Here are some pics.

It's now clear to me that there isn't much repair work that can be done inside the gimbal motor assembly. It's also clear that the motors aren't sealed against dust, water, or debris.

I haven't completely disassembled a camera yet.

Once you take the motors out of their housings, it's almost impossible to get them back in.

The motors and circuit boards are resistant to the elements, the yaw arm motor connector is recessed into the yaw arm, and the cover is screwed on tightly and partially glued with insulation and silicone, so it takes a lot for water to get in there.

The roll motor cover is tightly screwed in and also has some internal insulation to keep debris and water out.

The most insulated part of the gimbal is the camera body. It not only has a recessed connector that is covered in a silicone paste but also has a putty that covers most of the circuit board and the cover is also glued in with a silicone paste.

The bearings are all sealed and watertight.

For something that was not meant to be submerged, the Mavic is pretty water resistant.

Well, there must have been a lot of water because it got into the motor circuit boards and motors. The exteriors of the bearings were starting to rust. I hoped to salvage the ribbon cable, but, alas, the connectors were ruined; same for the LVDS cable.

Might have been under water for a while.
