New York City getting serious

Hobby was fun while it lasted. You'll have to fly in the desert to get some flight time in...that's if it's not a national park. Lol

Its simple, join the police or one of the many goverment agencys with more money than common sense, convince your superiors that these drones flown by the public are extremely dangerous and they are going to kill someone -wont somebody think of the children;-) -
Set up a drone unit to combat the perceived threat, then spend your days being payed to play at flying fully funded drones whilst doing nothing to solve what is at most a very minor risk from the public flying drones :D

Plus unless you have have a fully armed drone to shoot down the other drone being flown in the wrong place, what use is it in addressing this issue, over other resources the police already have in abundance

"“People could definitely die,” Lt. Richard Knoeller said."

a tad dramatic, outside of military drones of course I think the worse injury I can think of is a toddler who lost a eye/blinded by a idiot with drone.

Have their been any recorded incidents of anyone killed by our type of drones?

Nope, more people die every year from selfies.

:)

A big fat zero on anyone being killed by our types of drone,
although since this thread started 1 person will have sadly died somewhere in the world and many more injured ...... putting on their trousers, so it could be argued that a specialist police trouser prevention unit - drones probably not needed ;) - would be far more beneficial and effective to the public at large than a specialist police drone unit :D

I understand that NYC has deployed some of these... DJI “playing both sides of the street” so to speak.

3287 people die each and every day in the USA in car wrecks and there worried about a 1lb drone give me a freakin break.

It's a shame because it only takes one or two irresponsible flyers to portray a bad image on the entire community. Most people on here that would love to fly the Mavic in NYC would definitely be responsible. But there are definitely people that would do stupid risks/ and have unfortunately ruined it for the rest of us.

I have no idea how far away the individual was from the drone that crashed into the Empire State Building but you have to be an idiot to intentionally fly a drone in mid-town or lower Manhattan (benefit of the doubt that something flow away while on the east or west side). As much as I enjoy flying much of NYC, given the high congestion (people, vehicles, buildings), is not an ideal place to fly. I'm sure every borough has some open space where during certain times of the day there aren't a lot of people around where/when you can enjoy the hobby.
