I’m just curious.

For example, after hurricane Laura I saw news reports showing damage and they said it’s from their drone shots.

Do they get special kinds of authorizations?

It's fairly common for a News Agency to get the approval to embed with the IC and fly after an incident especially one of the scale of a hurricane.

UAS operators, whether news agencies, insurance companies, or SAR, can get what's called a Emergency Certificate of Authorization (ECOA). ECOAs are available via the Special Government Interest (SGI) process. And the FAA is incredibly easy to work with when it comes to gaining permissions as long as you're a qualified pilot.

The process is here: Emergency Situations
