OH lookie another drone at 4,000 ft

They seem obsessed with drones.
I liked the story about spying on cash machines, what a great way to see the pin being entered, you could have a fishing line dangling below and hook the card too.
A drone was reported near the M4, that could easily have caused devastation.
Not as much fun as looking down on the naked people, phwoar.
Maybe you could sell the footage to pornhub.

Oh but at the end it says you now have to pass a test and pay £9 - curses, foiled again.

So you know of pornhub huh ?

Never heard of it.

From TFA, and also quoted in the BBC's coverage:

"The UK Airprox Board said it was unable to determine whether the "unknown object" was a drone because of the reported altitude and its description."

At least it seems the UK's Airprox Board seems to have taken on board some of the "constructive criticism" levelled at them by the BMFA and others over the default "the pilot claimed it was a drone, ergo it must have been a drone" stance. It also seems that in this instance the pilot's description was pretty vague too; just something ~50cm x 50cm, black, and with a light source (or reflective surface that caught the plane's landing lights - it was on approach after all). Could just as easily have been a party balloon, or maybe even swamp gas... But nope, "drone".

Still, it looks like the main problem here is, as usual, the media's desire to generate clicks through sensationalist headlines (AKA "lies") that are designed to push people's buttons to generate a few more ad impressions.

At least they didn't use a picture of a PHANTOM (first time every I think LOL).

Wait for it . . .
Wait for it . . .

My new Mavic Mini was flying just fine when all of a sudden it shot straight up about 4000 feet.
I repeatedly tried the RTH but nothing happened. Anybody have an idea what went wrong?

Cruising speed 647 mph

parody of course!

would be interesting to know what the 4000 ft wind was on that day!

If the Jet was on approach
would be interesting to know what the 4000 ft wind was on that day!
For instance, checked the winds at 6000 feet this morning at Los Angeles international...5kts. If he was on approach he could have easily seen a drone. and lets face it..there are lots of boneheads around and these things can boogie right on up.

Sky News {or is it Fake News ???} expect everyone to believe their claim.
Their claim that at 4,000 feet they saw a 15cm object that was Black and had flashing lights on it.
Must have been a drone, yet whilst traveling at several hundred MPH it was only 10 feet away.
We're talking about a NANO second in time to give such detail.
They would have had time to see what model the drone was and possibly the serial number.
If in the process of landing, why wasn't the pilot checking his instruments ??? Too busy looking out for Drones. !!!!
If the Drone was within 10 feet of the plane, consider the air turbulence caused by the plane.
That alone would have caused havoc.
Personally I think the pilot had his hands all over his joy stick trying to land.

Why don't we call out for the Pilot of the drone to come forward with footage. Anonymously of course.
If they are sooooooooo certain it was a drone, make them prove it.
Where is the Dash Cam Footage.????
I'm waiting for a YouTube video titled "Drone racing a Bombardier Global 6000 to the airport"
Drone pilot wants to clear customs before the plane passengers. !!!!!!!!!!!

It's a simply excuse for Revenue Raising.

Erm excuse me but what a [Language removed by Admin] ! bloody news papers have nothing better to do than report rubbish and false reports, I don't believe a word of it and you have got to love the spying on ATM's haha or maybe it was ATM's from PornHub?? :)

No doubt hat the press down on drones however I would like to know the flight conditions at the time. If he was in VMC conditions the non flying pilot could well have identified a drone approx. 10 feet away from him. In my flying days (RAF) not as pilot, I had a small window beside me and you could see and photograph so much through it. I would like to see the whole report.

Let me go on record saying I am not saying it WAS or WAS NOT a drone/sUAS. I have no clue but we still need have our ducks in a row if we're going to discuss it.

First off it's reported as 50cm x 50cm not 15cm. If you're going to critique others you gotta get your details spot on or face the same scrutiny.

How long does it take for the human eye to pick up on an object and for the brain to determine (with some degree of error of course) what the object is? It happens every single day and this is not an unrealistic "possibility". We have been programmed to "assume" any object in the air which we do not identify immediately to be a drone. I'm as guilty as the next person. Anytime I see a speck on the sky I first think "That could be a drone" and I then look closely and 99x out of 100 it's NOT a drone but my firxt conclusion is always drone. Part of that is because of my fascination with R/C flying and part of it because I genuinely WANT to see drones flying. I love seeing them, talking to operators, and talking about drones.

What? Do you not expect the PILOT of the aircraft to have eyes out the window looking for potential foreign objects in the flight path? I sure do and as a pilot we are expected to do that. The mere idea that a pilot would never look out the window (unless they are flying in IMC and fixated to the instruments but that's not the case here) during a landing approach in and of itself a troubling concept. To insinuate a pilot should NOT be looking out the window is very troubling.

If the Drone was within 10 feet of the plane, consider the air turbulence caused by the plane.
That alone would have caused havoc.

Turbulence ahead of the plane? Does the aircraft push a bubble of turbulence ahead as it's flying along that would cause havoc? If that were the case we would never have to worry about a drone, bird, hail, or anything ever striking the plane because this massive protective bubble of turbulence surrounds the plane and prevents anything coming within line of vision or striking the aircraft (Heavy sarcasm here).

If the article stated, "Drone follows aircraft closely behind, over takes the aircraft and then almost collides with the aircraft" I would say their Wake Turbulence (behind and emanating out from the wings) would come into play. Anything else isn't going to be even remotely feasible.
Personally I think the pilot had his hands all over his joy stick trying to land.
Seriously?

Why don't we call out for the Pilot of the drone to come forward with footage. Anonymously of course.
If they are sooooooooo certain it was a drone, make them prove it.

I can assure you without a doubt all parties involved would LOVE to the would-be drone operator to come forward. Without an incident that just doesn't happen. IF it was a drone, (and I stress IF) the operator may not even know how close he came to the aircraft.

Where is the Dash Cam Footage.????

I am confident we will see the day when all commercial flights have "Dash Cam" type recording devices recording every minute of the planes operation much like many Law Enforcement vehicles have now. I actually think that's an excellent idea and should be implemented ASAP.

Do I have something of worth to contribute to this conversation?
Nope.
Just that I'm the bone head who read the post title and thought "Why does it have to be another Ohio (OH) Drone pilot doing stupid stuff to make us look bad."

Haven't read all the post but does DJI make a drone this big I mean 50x50 cm is bigger then any dji drone I've seen
