Proposed legislation

An interesting piece for sure. Here in Canada we are facing even more restrictive proposals than we already have. It will make it virtually impossible for the average guy to fly a Mavic Pro, for example. Much has been said elsewhere on this forum regarding the safety issues relating to commercial aviation. The terrorist issue is something that has been brewing for a very long time, and it has been my impression that the federal authorities in the past have dismissed this whole idea as just a bunch of inept individuals playing with their "toys". What could they possibly do? Some of us have thought this out to its logical outcome, and foreseen the possibilities of terrorist groups utilizing seemingly harmless "toys" as weapons. The Israelis and the U.S. military have been using UAV technology for years to surveil defences and possible targets. What's to say that an "inept" bunch like ISIS are not using this technology for the same purposes. In fact, I'm surprised that they have not been used more. So what defence does HS or the FAA put up to prevent an attack? Registration does little to nothing to defray the endeavours of determined destructive behaviours. It really all goes back to good intelligence. And here is where the UAV community can actually help. With millions of UAV casual users, there is a community with "ears" and this intelligence can be tapped, potentially by a whole variety of methods which I will not go into here.

Frankly, if the governments want the community with "ears" to watch for intelligence on potential terrorist, they need to stop treating everyone as a potential terrorist. The quickest way to alienate the community and align them against the government or cooperation with the government is to over regulate and antagonize the community with stupid regulation and restrictions that have no affect on the 'stated' issue. Unfortunately, the governments have done exactly this. Yes, terrorist can use drones for bad things, just as they can use trucks, planes, boats, phones, networks, thumb drives, and any other item to cause harm. You cannot stop progress or restrict technology because someone might misuse it, which is exactly how the government addresses the problem. Not a single one of these laws/restrictions/bans will stop a person with intent and no respect for the law. It ONLY affects the people trying to follow the law with no intent of causing harm.

Well said, It seems to me that some of the biggest law breakers are in the government. Then some of them have said, that if your aren't caught, then you aren't breaking the law.....

Also, if a governmental person, shots down or disable's a drone which has been flying in a league fashion, causing it to crash and injure a person on the ground or damage property, who would be at fault....

What would be the reason as to why they disabled the drone?

I see this being no different than the whole gun issue. They can pass all the laws they want and the only people it will affect are the law abiding citizens. Criminals will still use drones for illegal activities as their chance of getting caught is low. They will not obey any law passed to limit drone flying.

One guys opinion.....
You speak the truth sir

I always wanted a merit system.
If you screw up breaking laws and rules, get hammered so bad that it scares others from doing the same thing.
Second offence, never to legally fly a drone again.
A heavy handed method, but sooner or later it could work.

Law enforcement being able to knock down rogue drones, they must be able to do that. This is a no brainer.

How do you suppose folks will feel when the YouTube videos on how to build your own DIY drone jamming (crashing) device start to surface? That will be a real problem.
