does it do any harm to spin up the motors without have the props on>?
 
Nope. Just don't run the motors like that for long periods of time.

thx,i didnt know if the props provide a balancing effect or not.
 
There's just no point in doing that.

OTOH, taking props off is recommended for FW upgrades, I've seen at least one report here of Mavic taking off on its own.
 
If you do that long enough, the Mavic will give you an error message "Motor idling (loose or missing propeller)." It's trying to tell you that without a load on the motors, they can overspeed.
