I took the exact same file from a DJI Mavic Air (4k30 h.264) and put it on the timeline in these three programs. iMovie blew Premiere and Resolve away.
PC Specs: Ryzen 5 1600, 16GB ram, SSDs, 1080 GTX
Mac Specs: 2012 Mac mini, i7 2.6GHz, 8GB ram, SSD, built in graphics
Premiere and Resolve were fine, but not nearly as smooth as iMovie. What is going on here? I didn't proxy/ingest any of the footage, it should be playing h.264 (unless iMovie is doing something behind the scenes). I have been doing some research and it sounds like Apple has really tuned the use of quicksync in the Intel chips, is this what is making the difference? Does anyone have butter smooth scrubbing in Premiere and Resolve without proxy?
I should note that the preview window in iMovie looks worse than the other two, but changing the preview window resolution in Premiere and timeline resolution in Resolve doesn't make much of a difference. I don't have the paid version of Resolve either (which I hear has better h.264 performance).
