Using just your phone as controller.

Not sure I'm typing the correct info in the search and cant find anything to answer my question. So posting here now. I am for the first time trying out flying my MA via the phone alone. I have got as far as being in the field with a picture and are able to access the camera which is working fine. I moved the screen sticks in the way I would the controller, but the motors wouldnt start up. I did see a vid somewhere where they used the take off icon on the screen. So, didnt want to take any chances and left it for now. My question is, is that the only way to take off that way or should I be able to work the sticks on the screen. They do everything they should when I move them.

I've never flown the MA via phone alone. Have done it with a spark. However just take off the propellers and use the take-off slider to see if the motors spin up. If they do use throttle down to stop them again.
