The only thing you need is to know where you can and can't fly.

Like Anthony said just know where you can and can't fly. National parks are a big big no no so the grand canyon is off your list I'm afraid. You can try and obtain a permit but that usually takes around 4 weeks and no guarantees it will be approved.

Note that very large chunks of San Diego are covered by no-fly zones. I tried calling the airport's, but there are so many of them and the numbers in airmap are incorrect. The one that I got hold of gave me a prompt no .
