WiFi needed?

just got my Mavic Pro Ana had to calibrate sensors and download firmware. But I am still seeing no WiFi connection. After reading there is a switch on the drone to enable WiFi. Question I have is why? Do you not need a WiFi connection?
 
No. Use controller, WiFi is to fly with phone.
 
The Mavic has two modes on that switch. You can have it set to 'WiFi' or 'RC' ... The RC mode is the normal and usual mode for the Mavic, which allows you to use Go4 running on a phone or tablet attached to the RC Controller. The WiFi setting is for controlling the Mavic from Go4 ONLY i.e. using just the mobile device to control the drone with virtual sticks on the touch-screen ... Have a look at your manual in the section about the Go 4 app (page 48 in version 2.0 of the manual):
