I too did exactly what you propose to do. I have owned the original mavic pro, the air and the mavic 2 pro with smart controller. Long story short, I very much like this mini 3 pro and the DJI RC and will not miss my previous kit. Especially because it is so quiet with a low frequency pitch...
I recently went to Canada and was very disappointed with the range of my M2P with my SC. I realized I was in CE territory and wondered if the M2P switched from FCC to CE despite no internet connection.
I can’t compare the distance to the standard remote or even confirm it switched to CE, but...
I'd consider a Hero 7. Amazing stability and you can get them for 299 if you have any old crappy digital camera, working or not.

My experience is everyone helps because most know your pain. I do. I've:
1) run my mp pro into side of my house while flying in sport mode (refresh).
2) flown backwards into hill (no damage but hard to access and locate).
3) flown in to river requiring scuba gear to get it out (refresh)...
I checked and confirmed the DJI app find my drone feature included the spot where it hit the water and my location. I am the blue fit that is partially under the done icon.
I sunk and found my drone. As I recall GO4 App using find my drone feature provided both the last known spot and where I currently was. I just zoomed in and tried to keep my blue dot at last known location. It was amazingly accurate.
I've had numerous refresh claims and all required between 5-9 days door to door.
But your problem, I think, will be that refresh does not apply to controllers. I'm sure someone else will confirm if that is true or not. Thunderdrones may be a good option.
Good luck.
