Gimbal - A gimbal is a pivoted support that allows the rotation of an object about a single axis. A set of three gimbals, one mounted on the other with orthogonal pivot axes, may be used to allow an object mounted on the innermost gimbal to remain independent of the rotation of its support.
You can find all the parts you need online (ribbon cable, LVDS camera cable, gimbal vibration damping plate) and repair it yourself. There are videos on youtube. Or, contact forum member @Thunderdrones. He does repairs quickly and at reasonable prices.

I've worked on a number of gimbals and torn one completely apart to see what's inside. There is nothing in them that should be capable of making a high pitched squeal.

Those covers are just little pieces of plastic. If the screws are tightened too much during factory assembly or following a repair, they are very likely to crack. Mostly a cosmetic issue that will not impact operation.
If you're in the U.S. or don't mind shipping internationally, @Thunderdrones repairs gimbals and just about anything else on Mavics and other drones. He has reasonable prices and tons of experience.
