I am constantly amazed at what people think these drones will do. I guess I'm a timid, perhaps overly conservative operator, but I wouldn't have undertaken that flight in a million years.
Stop baffling us with this technical talk :D
Seriously though, many many of us have lost, or thought we are were going to lose our drone for one reason or another. Glad your situation resulted in you getting your drone back.
I will say this, however, and I mean it more kindly than it may come...
Operational scrutiny and critique might not help understand why a drone shut off, but for sure it will help with flight planning to minimise the dangers if it does. It's all learning and I for one am grateful for it.
They'll show what was happening *until* you lost connectivity. Which would let the experts explain what happened.
Without that analysis you risk repeating the mistakes or malfunctions of the past.
Lastly, reading your post I'm not entirely clear what the maximum distance was, but if I...
I have no idea if it contributed to the problems with this flight, but as a general observation I think any time you start a flight with the battery pack in this condition you are pretty much asking for trouble:

I've never liked hand landing - flying a drone toward you (ie flying down to your hand) under power always seemed like a bad idea to me. But I do a hand grab on every flight. In my opinion moving your hand to the drone is a much safer idea than flying the drone down to you.
For a right handed...
Home point was 300 feet away. *I* was right next to the drone. We were walking along with it And I was resetting home to appropriate places as we moved about on the terrain.
