It could have done a factory reset my smart controller resets to 1 Jan 2013 at 3:24 AM every time I go off Wi-Fi or it could have been an update or maybe you were randomly selected by DJI to beta test some software

I have the sticks that came with it but I would like the comfort of regular thumb pads like on a video game controller.

I have had the same problem in the past I have found in certain situations you can just ease in and out of the stick keeping it really slow and smooth or I have used Atti mode to kind of pan for me you can look up how to turn your M2 into Atti mode on YouTube or Google it’s super easy I could do...
