What are the rules on flying near birds of prey?

Correct. It is unlawful under the federal Migratory Bird Treaty Act "to at any time, by any means, or in any manor, to harass, pursue, hunt, take, capture, kill, or attempt to harass, pursue, hunt, take, capture, or kill any migratory bird protected under the Act, which includes all hawks, owls...

New Mavic Pro 2 Owner Here. Any User Advice?

I ran into the EXACT same issue with the M2P a few years ago. I was flying around noon on the winter solstice (I think we were like 15 min. off of the exact moment of the solstice) and when the autonomous flight turned S into the sun to get back home, she stopped and went into a hover. After a...

New Mavic Pro 2 Owner Here. Any User Advice?

A most entertaining post, Sir! I, too, am a big fan of the M2P and autonomous missions. From what I have gleaned elsewhere, and this is distilled opinion, DJI is reserving autonomy for their professional lines as one of the major benefits of going big. I do miss the days of long-range FPV, very...

A well-done film with a peacefulness that matches the island's. Thank you for posting it.

I'm Furious! Mini 3 Pro Can't Fly Waypoint Missions

This was one helluva thread and very enlightening. I just finished reading all 7 pages. There are some very wise commenters here. I have used waypointing since it first became available w/DJI Naza and other flight controllers about 10 years ago and it's sad to see DJI drop this from the...

    Drones vs RC planes

Yes, that is correct as far as FAA is concerned (for instance, we all register at Dronezone). But at least for my posts in this thread, I call multirotors "drones"... it's an old-school thing, I guess. I should probably stick to the term "multirotor". Kind regards!

    Drones vs RC planes

Agreed. It takes a lot of skill to fly drones deliberately, to put them where you want them with precision, especially in the case of tracking, as you said. I have to fly out of a lot of dicey places, like out of or through small gaps in the forest canopy, or along narrow, sinuous mountain-brook...

That is a great video, Sir. And it looks like a great club, too. Outstanding.

    Drones vs RC planes

I've been flying RC airplanes for 30+ years, and still prefer them over drones. And I do love my drones. But it is a whole different game. I fly mostly large EPP foam airplanes like the Finwing Penguin and such that carry Canon rangefinder cameras in their bellies and use Pixhawk flight...

    Drones for hunting?

I'll bet that you have quite the collection of stories to tell. I have complete respect for the wardens here. They have always been quick on the response and follow through with their promises. IMHO, they are the only people in the state department of environmental protection who actually care...

    Drones for hunting?

I know that this is ripe for abuse, but it seems that if drones are used to end suffering, that is a righteous use. I would be most interested in the findings from calls to game wardens.

    Drones for hunting?

Hi D, No, I am not a LEO, I am a forest ecologist managing 10,000 acres of land trust preserves in New England. We don't have a deer overpopulation problem where I am because the forests are aging out of optimality for deer. Most of my hunters are on the farmlands / early succession habitat that...
