If you took off with a severe compass error and the out of control drone was headed towards a group of people (with in-flight CSC set to default “emergency only”) would this be enough of an emergency to allow you to perform a CSC?

So true! And so often ignored. I flew my 350QX for almost 2 years before I realized I wasn't doing coordinated turns (effective use of both yaw and roll) but just "slipping" to a new direction.
I've flown my M2Z with the CS down to 2 bars but never experienced your issue.

Maybe try flying without so much ground time? I believe it gets pretty hot in the NT this time of year and that might be degrading your CS's performance.
