I can only speak from my own experience, I use iOS and the DJI app has never crashed on me. I been using an iPhone 6 + and an iPad mini 4 and have never had any problems with the hardware.

Have you considered that you just have a faulty unit? I'm in Europe and have had zero issues with range and know others with no issues either.
