Phones don't have a compass per say but they do have a magnetometer which is basically the same thing and this tells them their heading. This is how sky maps work

They really make the image clearer. The polarized doesn't do the exact same as the regular Nd filter, it blocks glare and reflection on objects and water. The regular Nd makes the colors crisper, the sky bluer and softens the sun's glare
