I'm a believer in hand launch / catch, though I use it only when necessary when there is no suitable spot of ground. In my experience turning off VPS does not stop the Mavic from fighting you - turn off Landing Protection, and leave VPS on if you want.

These are probably honeybee drones who think they just discovered the most fantastic queen bee, which ironically turns out to be your drone. They wait at about 50 feet altitude and listen for the queen's wing beat frequency. If you go higher, or lower, they will ease off.

Hubsan makes good durable drones that will get you used to ATTI mode. In the $100 range or less. Get one with altitude hold if possible. Good learning experience, but keep in mind they are much harder to fly than the Mavic. BTW - you can set your Mavic up to access ATTI mode via the sport...

This looks like the cached video on your tablet / phone, not the higher quality "real" video that goes to the onboard flash or SD card.

Re flying a Mavic through the tunnel - use OPTI mode, not ATTI, and illuminate the area under the Mavic if necessary. Good luck - sounds like this will be an interesting video.
